  5.     The Middle East arms race is expected to take another leap
  6. into space soon when Israel launches its second and most
  7. sophisticated reconnaissance satellite. Dubbed the Ofek-2, the
  8. spying device may be in orbit in a matter of weeks, providing
  9. detailed photographs of troop movements and missile activity
  10. in Israel's neighboring Arab states.

  12.     Although still considered experimental, Ofek-2 (the name
  13. means Horizon in Hebrew) is equipped with a state-of-the-art
  14. high-resolution electro-optical camera and is programmed to
  15. circle the globe for at least two years. Its predecessor,
  16. Ofek-1, was launched in September 1988 and stayed aloft four
  17. months.

  19.     Both satellites were developed by state-owned Israel
  20. Aircraft Industries and were designed to be hurled into space
  21. by Israel's powerful rocket, the Shavit (Comet). I.A.I. is also
  22. working on a civilian communications satellite, called the
  23. Amos, which it hopes to send into orbit within two years.
